Studio Time

Where do I possibly begin? I have dreamed of professionally recording my songs since I started writing them in 2001. There were so many moments I started to become anxious during this process, and I had to just stop and remind myself, “This is actually happening!” I showed up at John’s for our first session at 6:30pm Thursday evening. The plan was to have a two hour tracking session for mandolin, drums, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and bass. The guys did a great job. We finished tracking the last instruments around midnight. I’ve learned that recording involves a lot of waiting. A lot of watching. And A LOT of listening.

Not realizing the stages of how things sound also had me nervous. Everything sounded fragmented with different things sticking out here and there. I left Thursday night exhausted but happy with what we had. Friday morning I arrived at 10:30am to track my guitar and vocals. When John started playing the song for me to play guitar on, it was magical. Overnight he had mixed everything. I was no longer hearing a barrage of different sounds, but a project that was slowly taking shape. I couldn’t believe how amazing everything sounded in my headphones as I tracked my vocals. I really can’t imagine it being better, and he hasn’t even mastered it yet.

This Thursday I go in for my final session to track background vocals. That in itself is a small miracle. John has so graciously offered to do background vocals while staying in my original budget, and we won’t be set back on our due date. What a blessing!!!

I believe SO much in this project, and I can’t wait for you guys to hear what we have been working so hard on. I’ve been blown away by John’s talent and heart. It truly has been everything I could hope for working with him.
